LUCY COOK
BIO
Lucy Cook is a Devon painter based in Wales. Cook's work focuses on the essence of liminality and the nature of functionless space. The idea of "in - betweeness" informs the atmosphere that she strives to capture. She primarily uses photography to immortalise the spaces she admires in the small towns surrounding Cardiff. These images are then used as a starting point of reference before translating them into oil paintings. Cook also uses sculpture to mold new spaces that loosely resemble figurative and architectural forms. This method of "world building" helps her to express the humorous despair and absurdity of the imagination when in a state of longing.

since completing her bachelors degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2024, Cook remains in Cardiff working on new paintings for future exhibitions and projects.

STATEMENT
" My practice centres around the functionless and banal spaces and moments of the everyday. I think about people, places and objects to form narratives that could take place in our overlooked edgeland spaces, which are expressed through oil paint. The aim of my work is to encapsulate the intangible essence of liminality by situating aspects of the everyday in a slightly abstracted world, taking time to contemplate the nature of third space and the uncanny."
